This Women's History Month We Honor the Wisdom and Resilience of Amazing Senior Women

As we honor Women's History Month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of senior women for their wisdom, resilience, and experiences that enrich our lives and serve as a beacon of inspiration for us all. Let's continue to uplift and celebrate these remarkable women, ensuring their stories are heard, their achievements are recognized, and their legacy endures for generations to come.

Throughout history, the wisdom, resilience, and achievements of women have shaped societies and paved the way for future generations. Women during and before our time have broken barriers and defied societal expectations in their respective fields. Notable figures like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Maya Angelou, Jane Goodall, and others—including our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and friends, have made an enduring impact on society, the ongoing fight for gender equality, and provide daily inspiration through their accomplishments, adventures, and stories.

The Trailblazers of Friendship

In the bustling community of The Bellettini in Bellevue, Washington, resides a dynamic duo whose bond spans decades and defies conventional norms. Meet Janet Russell and Patty Barnes, two extraordinary women whose serendipitous encounter at the University of Seattle blossomed into a lifelong friendship filled with shared experiences, career milestones, and unwavering support.

Their story began with a twist of fate – Janet and Patty found themselves at a crossroads, grappling with roommate issues during their university years. A chance encounter one weekend led them to make a bold decision: to become roommates themselves. Little did they know that this spontaneous choice would lay the foundation for a friendship that would withstand the tests of time.

As they embarked on their respective career paths, Janet delved into the world of technology at IBM. At the same time, Patty pursued her passion for social justice through nonprofit work at Catholic Community Services. Despite the divergence in their professional trajectories, their bond remained unbreakable, providing a source of strength and inspiration as they navigated the challenges and triumphs of their chosen fields.

Today, Janet's expertise in technology shines through as she volunteers at The Bellettini, sharing her knowledge and passion for all things tech with fellow residents. Her apartment serves as a hub of innovation, transformed into a Smart Home that embodies her commitment to staying ahead in the digital age.

When asked about their advice for women navigating the complexities of today's world, Janet and Patty offered invaluable insights rooted in their own experiences. Janet encourages women to seize opportunities with a resounding "yes," emphasizing the transformative power of embracing new experiences and connections. Meanwhile, Patty underscores the importance of finding a supportive mentor, recognizing the profound impact that guidance and encouragement can have on one's personal and professional growth.

But perhaps the most poignant advice comes from Janet, who champions the unwavering belief in oneself and the refusal to succumb to others' limitations. Her defiant choice to stand out in a sea of conformity, as evidenced by her colorful red power suit at Rotary meetings mostly attended by men, serves as a powerful reminder of the inherent strength we can all possess.

In the lives of Janet and Patty, we find not just a testament to friendship and success, but a celebration of courage, determination, and female empowerment.

The Resilient Centenarian

In a world that's constantly evolving, it's rare to find someone who embodies the essence of resilience, adaptability, and wisdom all in one. Meet Virgina, a remarkable woman who has called The Commons at Union Ranch home for the last 13 years. From her early days at Santa Rosa Junior College to her illustrious career as a nurse with Kaiser, Virginia's journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Her story begins during a pivotal moment in history – World War II. As women were encouraged to step into roles traditionally held by men, Virginia found herself drawn to nursing. She became part of the Nurse Cadets program, laying the foundation for a career dedicated to caring for others.

Throughout her tenure with Kaiser, Virginia wore many hats – from assisting with deliveries to providing maternity care. Reflecting on her time with Kaiser, she fondly recalls the camaraderie and support she received, emphasizing that there was always a place for her within the organization.

But perhaps what's most remarkable about Virginia is not just her professional accomplishments, but her approach to life itself. When asked about her advice for new moms struggling to find their footing, she simply emphasized taking it "day by day." And when it comes to the secrets of longevity, Virginia attributed it to moderation – a timeless principle that has served her well over the years.

Yet, it's Virginia’s perspective on happiness that truly resonates. "It is what it is," she said with a hint of wisdom, "and so you make the best of it." For Virginia, happiness isn't about chasing after fleeting moments of joy, but finding contentment in the present moment and embracing life's inevitable twists and turns.

Virginia leaves us with one final piece of advice – find a partner you truly get along with. In a world filled with uncertainty, having someone by your side who understands and supports you can make all the difference.

In Virginia’s journey, we find not just a century of memories, but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of hope, love, and laughter.

With an impressive resume boasting 15 different jobs, Nancy has carved out a niche for herself unlike any other. Each piece she creates is a labor of love, often taking countless hours to complete, yet resulting in breathtaking works of art that captivate and inspire.

But Nancy's talents extend far beyond the realm of artistry. From teaching Chinese in America to imparting her knowledge of China painting and jewelry making in China itself, she has served as a bridge between cultures, sharing her expertise and passion with eager learners across the globe.

Yet, amidst her artistic pursuits, Nancy's heart has always been with animals. Her involvement with the Central California Labrador Retriever Rescue is a testament to her unwavering commitment to animal welfare. Over just three years, Nancy has rescued over 300 dogs, providing them with love, care, and a second chance at life. Her orchard home served as a sanctuary for both dogs and humans alike, offering a haven where people could live rent-free while caring for the beloved animals under Nancy's watchful eye.

Nancy's journey has been anything but conventional. From her days as a card dealer in Reno and South Lake Tahoe to her harrowing experiences working in casinos, she has faced challenges head-on, never shying away from adversity. Her upcoming book, detailing her firsthand experiences with cheating in casinos, serves as a testament to her determination to shed light on important issues.

Through it all, Nancy remains a shining example of empowerment and compassion to all those around her, including her many friends at The Commons at Union Ranch. Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
