The last Wednesday in September is National Women’s Health and Fitness Day – one of the largest events for women’s health. It’s estimated that nearly 100,000 women will gather at local health and fitness events to encourage a lifestyle centered on wellness. A focus that is in alignment with MBK Senior Living communities on this day – as well as the other 364 days of the year!
In solidarity for women (and men) throughout the world in their wellness journey, we suggest these activities to improve endurance, balance, strength, flexibility and overall health.
Aerobic Exercise. Contrary to belief, it doesn’t take much – a brisk walk around your neighborhood, some laps in the pool, a few minutes on a stationary bike. Whatever is your cardio choice you’ll reap rewards! Aerobic exercise can burn calories, lower blood and cholesterol levels and help you increase your endurance and improve your heart health.
Many of MBK Senior Living communities have regular walking clubs, where residents enjoy getting in their steps with friends and neighbors. Others utilize our on-site fitness centers to take a spin on a recumbent bike or elliptical trainer.
Strength Training. One of the best ways to alleviate joint swelling, stiffness or limited function is strength training. Plus, by consistent strength training you’ll maintain muscle and bone mass. Even simple movements like arm raises, chair sits and wall push-ups can boost muscle growth and increase bone density.
For those who want big benefits in little time, try MBK’s Tabata class. Tabata interval training incorporates a variety of aerobic and strength exercises performed for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest for 8 rounds. The entire workout is complete in just 4 minutes!
Balance Exercises. As part of MBK’s regular fitness program, residents balance specific training classes, as well as dance and other aerobic classes that go far to improve balance and posture. What’s more, these classes also support fall prevention, improve your proprioception and reduces the risk to lower-extremity (hips, knees and ankles) injuries.
Stretching. Most people know that stretching helps decrease your risk of injuries, helps you gain full range of motion and enables your muscles to work more effectively. But, did you know it’s also can aid in pain reduction? Tight muscles can increase pain and the effects of arthritis. Stretching helps to relieve tension in the body and helps with pain management.
Meditation. Far more than creating a sense of calm, meditation can also help you cope with stress and enhance your overall health. In fact, studies show that meditation can reduce blood pressure, anxiety and depression, insomnia and more.
Have fun! Perhaps one of the most important things to do along your wellness journey is to enjoy yourself. Having fun will increase your motivation (to keep going) and take the “chore” out of daily fitness.
At MBK Senior Living communities, our MBK Mind+Body Wellness approach provides residents the opportunity to choose from a number of activities, classes and programs that enrich the whole person - mind, body and spirit.
