Love Knows No Age: Embracing Romance in the Golden Years

|

In a world that often celebrates youth and new beginnings, a profound and beautiful truth transcends time – love knows no age. The idea of finding love later in life is a testament to the enduring nature of human connection. Contrary to popular belief, the journey to love doesn't have an expiration date, and many adults residing in senior living communities are discovering that love can bloom in unexpected places.

The beauty of finding love later in life often lies in the shared experiences and wisdom that seniors bring to a relationship. Having weathered life's storms and celebrated its triumphs, older individuals may find a deeper connection based on understanding, patience, and a shared appreciation for life's journey.

Across the country, there are countless heartwarming stories of seniors who have found love later in life within their senior living communities. These stories serve as powerful reminders that meaningful connections can be forged at any stage in life.

Meet Roberta and Lee:

Roberta has been a long-time resident of MBK Senior Living’s McDowell Village in Scottsdale, Arizona. She moved in with her first husband Cal in 2015, who entered memory care a few years later and passed in 2019. Lee moved in right down the hall shortly thereafter, and they began dating in early 2020. After a quick courting, they were married that September in the heart of the pandemic with their families watching via Zoom.

Their love, respect, and companionship are inspirational for the team members of their community, who have witnessed their blossoming friendship and romance.

The Role of Senior Living Communities in Finding Love

Senior living communities have become vibrant hubs where individuals can not only enjoy their golden years but also explore new relationships. Residents are offered a range of activities and social events that provide ample opportunities for them to meet and connect with like-minded individuals. From fitness classes and activity groups to restaurant-style dining experiences, these environments foster an inclusive and social atmosphere, encouraging seniors to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the possibility of finding love.

Moreover, senior living communities are designed to prioritize the well-being of their residents. The emphasis on a healthy and active lifestyle often translates into an environment that encourages positive relationships and personal growth. This supportive backdrop can be pivotal in helping seniors build connections that go beyond mere companionship, blossoming into genuine, heartfelt love.

Meet Rodney and Jeanne:

Rodney and Jeanne are both residents of The Creekside—an MBK Senior Living community in Woodinville, WA. What began as a friendship evolved into a deep and meaningful companionship, proving that love can arise when least expected.

February 2022

It was an ordinary day when Jeanne stopped at the front desk to seek transportation to go see her horse. She asked the concierge to call UBER or Lyft. Overhearing her request, Rodney stepped up and offered to take her.

“Let me just run upstairs and get my jacket and keys. I’ll take you to see your horse!” He said, without even knowing her name.

He dropped her off at the barn and offered to pick her up when she finished. This continued for several months, evolving into Rodney visiting Jeanne’s horse with her. They had a great time together and Rodney was becoming very fond of Jeanne.

By Spring 2023, they were in love.

Due to Jeanne’s faith, marriage wasn’t an option for them, but they are committed to one another (based on traditional vows) and wear rings representing their partnership. They are loving life and loving one another.

“I will love you forever and a day, Jeanne,” cooed Rodney.

Rodney and Jeanne’s kids are thrilled with their new relationship and wish them nothing but happiness.

Tips for Seniors Seeking Love

For seniors navigating the realm of love later in life, here are a few tips that can be instrumental in fostering romantic connections:

  • Embrace Social Opportunities. Participate in the various social activities and events organized by your senior living community. Whether it's a dance night or a gardening club, these gatherings offer a chance to meet new people and potentially find a romantic connection.

  • Be Open-Minded. Love can come in unexpected packages, and being open-minded about the possibilities can lead to surprising and fulfilling relationships. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

  • Communicate Clearly. Effective communication is key in any relationship. Be honest about your feelings, expectations, and past experiences. Clear communication helps build trust and understanding between individuals.

  • Take Your Time. There's no rush when it comes to love. Take the time to get to know someone on a deeper level before making any significant commitments. Building a strong foundation can lead to a more enduring and satisfying relationship.

Meet Mary and Dennis:

Mary and Dennis both moved to MuirWoods Memory care in Petaluma, California around the same time in August 2022.

Both active and avid walkers, they were drawn to each other right away and have been inseparable ever since. They walk the community hand-in-hand and their families have been introduced and all sit together at monthly family brunches.

We asked them what they thought about finding love later in life. Mary enthusiastically responded, “I like it! It sure does make the days a lot nicer. I like having him around, even when I’m not too happy with what he says or does sometimes. Not often. (Laughs.)” Mary continued, “He’s a good guy and I feel like there’s less to worry about now, there’s more wisdom added and less worry.”

Dennis added, “It’s kind of like a love fountain. Everything just flows together, with the sunshine and the water. It just works.”

Meet Myrtle and Travis:

Paula Banno, Executive Director of MBK’s Mountlake Terrace Plaza in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, shared the story of Myrtle and Travis, who often became the topic of chitchat after forming a connection in their community. According to Paula, their story began in the dining room, where chance—or perhaps fate—brought them together to discover an unexpected commonality. It was revealed that their paths might have crossed some sixty-two years earlier when they both attended the same schools and had the same teachers!

Learning that they attended the same school instantly bonded them and provided a lot of topics for conversation, but that was boring compared to what they soon discovered. They both are HUGE fans of the Washington Seahawks, Huskies, and Mariners! In addition, they both bring a fun, competitive spirit when they are playing one another in Cribbage, Bridge, or any board game. They even have game apps on their phones, so they don’t become rusty when they are apart and unable to play.

Beyond their common history and love of sports, they talk for hours sharing their many triumphs and challenges of life. Both are widows and share intimate details about their lives with their spouses. Travis lights ups when he talks about the many trips with his wife on their boat vacationing for months to their favorite destinations. Myrtle laughs out loud when she recalls her husband suggesting that she go to a class on assertiveness and how that changed her forever. They share all their stories but here’s the best part…they are creating new stories every day because they found a warm and compassionate partner who also likes to have a little fun by giving their neighbors something to talk about!

Finding love later in life is a journey that many seniors are embarking on with enthusiasm and optimism. By embracing the opportunities presented by these communities and staying open to the possibilities, seniors can discover that love knows no age limit. The heartwarming stories of Roberta and Lee, Rodney and Jeanne, Mary and Dennis, Myrtle and Travis, and many others serve as beacons of hope, proving that our later years can be filled with the warmth and companionship of genuine, lasting love. So, for seniors seeking love, the message is clear: the heart is ageless, and love is a journey that can be undertaken at any stage in life.

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
