Holiday Traditions That Make Our Communities Shine

There’s something extraordinary about the holiday season in senior living communities. The lights seem a little brighter, the music a little sweeter, and the sense of togetherness—already strong—grows even deeper. At MBK Senior Living communities, the holidays are more than festive décor and delicious meals. They’re an invitation to celebrate connection, joy, meaning, and the traditions that make each community feel like family.

From beloved long-standing customs to new celebrations that quickly become resident favorites, our communities come alive each December with activities that bring people together in the spirit of the season. And while every community celebrates in its own way, they all share one thing in common: a commitment to creating holiday moments that make life shine.

Below are just a few of the heartfelt traditions shared by our Directors of Wellness Programming—traditions that reflect creativity, compassion, cultural richness, and pure holiday fun.

A Community-Wide Scavenger Hunt at Almond Heights

At Almond Heights, one of the most anticipated traditions begins the moment December arrives.

“For the past three years, we’ve kicked off December with a community-wide jingle bell hunt,” shared Bimpe Ekundare, Director of Wellness Programming. “Residents and team members search every part of the community for hidden bells. The person who finds the most wins a prize. It brings the whole community together in a fun way.”

The friendly competition becomes a source of laughter, teamwork, and playful strategy as residents scour hallways, common rooms, and unexpected corners. But the jingle bell hunt is just the beginning.

“We also gather to decorate Christmas trees and wrap empty boxes for the bottoms of the trees,” Bimpe added. “During this exercise, we get to learn even more about our residents and their holiday traditions.”

It’s another beautiful example of how storytelling, shared memories, and creativity deepen the bonds that make Almond Heights feel like home.

Twelve Days of Celebration at Mountlake Terrace Plaza

At Mountlake Terrace Plaza, the holiday season is a global celebration of culture, joy, and community pride.

“We love holidays and Christmas around the world and how each culture celebrates it,” said Anne Paine, Director of Wellness Programming. “Our residents enjoy learning about different traditions, and some of our wonderful staff members share stories from their homeland.”

The highlight? An energetic “12 Days of Celebration” filled with themed days such as red and green day, pretty and ugly sweater day, Fitmas, bingo, music, and more.

Every year, the community is also visited by talented musicians, the Dicken’s Carolers, children’s choirs, and entertainers whose voices and performances bring the magic of the season to life. Residents even enjoy a cozy Christmas Eve tradition—hot cocoa, pajamas, and sharing the stories behind their favorite ornaments.

And then there’s the giving tree, which Anne describes as “a lot of emotional joy, laughter, and smiles.” Residents gift items to team members as a heartfelt gesture of appreciation and connection.

“It’s truly a heartwarming time that brings everyone together in the spirit of the season,” Anne said. “And yes—we get to eat all the candies, cookies, and enjoy the white elephant game!”

Timeless Celebrations at The Bellettini

The Bellettini takes a classic, elegant approach to the season by offering experiences that feel both festive and refined. Director of Wellness Programming, John Friedman shared some of the fun activities they have planned:

  • Casino Royale Night – A glamorous evening full of casino-themed fun

  • Friends & Family Holiday Meal – A beloved annual gathering

  • School Choir Performances – Musical visits throughout December

  • Hanukkah Celebration with Rabbi Mirel and Ensemble

  • Bellettini Wine Cellars: Bubbles & Champagne Night on December 30

  • New Year’s Eve Extravaganza – A joyful all-out celebration to welcome the new year

These cherished traditions create a month filled with music, connection, culture, and celebration.

“Pizza, Lights & Holiday Nights” at Huntington Terrace

At Huntington Terrace, one tradition brings together music, food, and the sparkle of the season.

“One of our Christmas traditions is driving around the city during the week before Christmas to see the Christmas lights,” shared Omayra Gingery, Director of Wellness Programming. “We sing along to Christmas songs on the bus and stop at a pizza place to enjoy pizza while watching the lights.”

Now in its fourth year, this outing is a resident favorite, combining the joy of holiday decorations with the comfort of shared food and cherished company.

“Residents love the Christmas spirit all around the streets,” Omayra added. It’s simple, sweet, and makes a lasting impression year after year.

Giving Back & Growing Together at The Creekside

The Creekside in Woodinville embraces the spirit of generosity with a deeply meaningful annual tradition.

“We do an Annual Toy Drive to benefit the kids at the Woodinville Storehouse Foodbank,” shared Katie Matthews. “We collect toys for all ages for one month. The foodbank arrives in the middle of December to pick everything up. This will be our third year—and we plan to continue for many years to come.”

In addition to the toy drive, the community hosts a yearly Holiday Vendor Fair with 15–20 local artisans and vendors. The event creates a festive shopping experience for residents, families, neighbors, and guests, while also raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.

“It’s a wonderful way to support the community, welcome visitors, and fill the building with holiday energy,” Katie said.

The Traditions That Bind Us

Across every MBK community, one theme shines brightest: the holidays bring out the very best in our residents, families, and team members. Whether it’s sharing ornaments, singing carols, hunting for jingle bells, giving back to local organizations, or simply gathering around a decorated tree, these moments remind us of the joy that comes from connection.

Every tradition—big or small—adds to the warmth that defines MBK Senior Living. And while the decorations will eventually come down, the laughter, memories, and sense of belonging created during the holiday season last long after the new year begins.

Because at MBK, the holidays don’t just shine—they bring light to everyone who walks through our doors.

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
