Happy, Healthy Lives – One Connection at a Time

|

To connect to others is a biological need -- being socially and emotionally connected to those around us leads to increased happiness, better health, and longer life! However, for older adults, the risks of loneliness and social isolation are a real and present danger. In fact, loneliness is attributed to serious health risks, including dementia, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and suicide.

At MBK Senior Living communities, we take pride in making connections. Whether it’s introducing new residents, connecting existing residents through common experiences or hobbies, developing long-lasting friendships, or simply caring for our family of residents, we thrive on building and maintaining relationships with residents, families, and team members in our communities. To us, it’s not just about making friends. It is a fundamental way we enhance residents’ day-to-day and help them live healthier and longer lives.

In honor of “National Cheer Up The Lonely,” and as part of our ongoing effort to facilitate valuable connections, consider these three simple ways you can bolster relationships and fend off loneliness.

  1. Pick up the phone and catch up with a loved one. Don’t text – call! Here’s why an important human quality to communications is lost in texting. Live person-to-person communication not only helps to strengthen connections and resolve conflicts but hearing someone’s voice can help you to feel more grounded, supported, and connected. With technology today, FaceTime and Zoom calls are even better as you can connect with others from nearly anywhere in the world to share a smile, a story, or say hello.

  1. Head outdoors to walk and talk. Not only is there a huge benefit to connecting in person, walking outdoors is known to improve moods and increase your vitamin D levels. Plus, walking will help you increase balance, muscle mass, and cardiovascular health and boost energy levels and ease joint pain. Take advantage of beautiful summer weather by taking a stroll with a friend or family member who has been cooped up inside – you’ll be glad you did!

  1. Share a joke. As they say, “laughter is the best medicine.” A good belly laugh has short- and long-term benefits on the body. Laughter enhances your oxygen intake, which stimulates your heart and muscles and helps you reduce physical and mental symptoms of stress. No joke, laughter can improve your immune system, relieve pain and lessen depression and anxiety. Today, there is a wealth of comic relief at your fingertips. Find and send a meme to a friend via Facebook, or find your favorite comedian on YouTube and share the link.

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
