In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed March to be Women’s History Month to go hand-in-hand with International Women’s Day. As part of his proclamation, he wrote, “From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.”
This month, as we continue exploring what “makes America great” as part of our ongoing resident enrichment program, we are celebrating extraordinary American women. Throughout MBK communities, residents are not only learning more about notable female influences (Rosa Parks, Billie Jean King, Clara Barton to name a few) in the past but also more recent accomplishments that will leave an indelible mark on American history. Namely, the first woman Vice President of the United States and the women scientists at the forefront of the COVID battle.
