April is Parkinson's Awareness Month

|

If the last month has taught us anything, it is how important it is to have a plan in place, a support system, and actionable steps we can take when life takes an unexpected turn!

When you – or a loved one – has Parkinson’s disease, you understand all too well that every day with Parkinson’s disease is different. The progressive nature of Parkinson’s makes it important to plan ahead for a time when day-to-day activities are too challenging to face alone.

It is common for seniors living with Parkinson’s disease to experience tremors in their hands that make simple tasks like brushing their teeth, eating, and getting dressed difficult. Impaired balance and dizziness can also increase the risk of a fall. An often-misunderstood aspect of PD is the way it can affect your mood. It’s estimated that people living with Parkinson’s disease have lost 60 – 80% or more of the neurons that produce dopamine1. Dopamine is responsible for helping produce smooth and purposeful movement, but it also helps us experience pleasure and joy in our lives.

Living in a senior living community can help address many of the challenges someone living with Parkinson’s disease will face. Once a sedentary lifestyle has set in it is very difficult to reverse, particularly when you are living with a degenerative disease. At MBK communities you’ll find a person-centered care, amenities and services that support residents independence and support their overall health and wellbeing. Our on-site resident enrichment directors are specially trained to developing programming that enhances quality of life by keeping your mind, body, and spirit active and engaged. There are daily activities for connection, growth, and fun!

Individual resident apartments and common spaces in MBK Senior Living communities are thoughtfully designed for easy navigation for all levels of mobility. Every detail and amenity have been curated for both beauty and ease, from equipped fitness centers to graciously landscaped outdoor spaces that uplift and inspire. Most importantly, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that round the clock care is available, should a need arise. You can learn more about our care philosophy here.

Though there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, thoughtfully preparing for the years ahead can make a big difference and allow you to live your life to the fullest!

It's What We're Here For

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
