Haunted America: Ghosts and Legends of America

It’s enough to send shivers down your spine. During this month’s America the Great series, MBK’s resident enrichment department explored some of America’s greatest haunts and spooky legends.

Over the years, numerous places across the United States have become known for ghostly legends and lore. Steeped in history, these sites were places of suffering and death, some housed the insane and others seemingly were inhabited by previous owners. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, the tales are fascinating. Among some of the most notable scary sites are:

Alcatraz – Alcatraz is the site of the abandoned federal prison, with the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States. So, the ghost story goes like this, Park Service have confirmed the haunted history of Alcatraz over the years. Many have reported crashing sounds, cell doors mysteriously closing, screams, and intense feelings of being watched.

Stanley Hotel – Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is a top destination for ghost hunters, horror fans, adventure-seekers. Guests have reported strange occurrences such as shadowy figures, eerie laughter, flickering lights and items moving on their own. The hotel was also the inspiration for Stephen King’s novel The Shining following his own frightening stay at the hotel.

Winchester Mansion – Winchester Mansion was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Winchester. Located in San Jose, California, the Winchester Mansion is a popular tourist attraction, known for its odd and eerie construction that includes staircases that lead to nowhere, winding corridors, and doors that lead to walls or sudden drops.

In addition to exploring some of these spooky sites virtually, MBK residents enjoyed discussing UFO and Big Foot sightings, carving pumpkins, enjoying the Hunter’s Moon and preparing for Halloween Spook-taculars. It was a frightfully-fun month.

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
