7 Tips for Staying Cool and Active in the Summer Months

Summer is the perfect time for enjoying nature, visiting with friends, and trying new activities. But for older adults, rising temperatures can make it challenging to stay active while staying safe. Fortunately, with a few smart adjustments, you can keep moving, stay cool, and make the most of everything summer has to offer.

At MBK Senior Living, we believe that staying active isn’t just about physical fitness—it’s about connection, curiosity, and joy. Whether indoors or out, alone or with a group, movement can bring a renewed sense of purpose and a spark of happiness to each day.

Here are some senior-friendly ways to stay cool, comfortable, and energized all summer long:

1. Time Your Outdoor Activities Wisely

The summer sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so it’s best to plan outdoor activities in the early morning or after dinner when the air is cooler. A gentle morning walk, light gardening, or even stretching on a shaded patio can help you stay active without overheating.

Tip: Keep a light sweater handy. Early mornings can start cool, even in summer!

2. Stay Hydrated—And Then Some

Our sense of thirst diminishes with age, which means many seniors don’t realize they’re dehydrated until they’re already feeling the effects. Water is essential for staying energized, cooling the body, and keeping your muscles and joints in working order.

Easy ways to stay hydrated:
• Carry a reusable water bottle
• Infuse water with lemon, mint, or fruit slices
• Enjoy hydrating snacks like watermelon, grapes, and cucumbers
• Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you

3. Try Indoor Movement That Feels Good

You don’t need to go outside to keep your body moving. Many senior living communities offer indoor wellness programs, including yoga, tai chi, strength training, and dance. Even a few minutes of movement each hour can improve circulation and boost your mood.

Ideas to try:
• Join a group fitness class
• Walk the halls with a friend
• Follow along with a YouTube stretch video
• Do a seated dance or gentle cardio routine from your chair

4. Dress the Part

Loose-fitting, breathable clothing in natural fabrics like cotton and linen can help regulate your body temperature. Choose light-colored garments that reflect sunlight, and don’t forget the accessories—hats and sunglasses are your summer MVPs.

Bonus: Wear shoes with good grip and support to stay safe on warm surfaces and sidewalks.

5. Find Your New Favorite Summer Hobby

Who says staying active only means exercise? Anything that gets your body or mind engaged counts. Summer is the perfect season to explore something new—especially something that brings you joy.

Consider:
• Trying water aerobics or swimming if available
• Helping tend a community garden
• Getting involved in art or crafting projects
• Volunteering

Staying engaged helps keep the mind sharp, boosts your mood, and adds purpose to each day.

6. Cool Down With Community Fun

When temperatures rise, community spaces become perfect gathering spots. Take part in activities designed to keep things light, cool, and cheerful—from ice cream socials to trivia games to movie marathons.

At MBK Senior Living, we design our calendars to reflect the season—with plenty of opportunities to laugh, learn, and make meaningful connections without breaking a sweat.

7. Listen to Your Body

It’s okay to slow down. The most important thing you can do is listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, overly tired, or suddenly hot, take a break. Move to a cool space, drink water, and rest. Let your care team know if something feels off—they’re here to support you.

Remember: There’s strength in self-awareness and grace in resting when needed.

A Season to Thrive

Summer isn’t just about heat—it’s about light, laughter, and new experiences. Whether you're sipping lemonade on the patio, enjoying a group fitness class indoors, or exploring a new hobby with friends, the season offers countless ways to stay active while staying safe.

At our MBK communities, we provide the support, companionship, and programs that empower residents to thrive through every season. So as the temperatures rise, lean into the rhythm of summer—move your body, make new memories, and don’t forget to drink your water!

Every time that I visited my dad, I enjoyed myself from the moment I walked in the door. The place is just alive! It was always a pleasure to go in and be greeted by name and say hello to everyone, staff and residents.
