Casa de Santa Fe Receives Excellence in Care Designation from Alzheimer's Foundation of America for the fourth year in a row

A commitment to excellence in care and service has earned Casa de Santa Fe's Connections for Living by MBK Memory Care Neighborhood the “Dementia Program of Distinction” status from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) for the fourth consecutive year.  This prestigious distinction has only been given to 33 other memory care communities in the nation.

AFA’s Excellence in Care program was developed to establish nationwide standards of excellence in care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.  To receive a status of an “Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Excellence in Care Dementia Program of Distinction,” an AFA Excellence in Care specialist evaluated Casa de Santa Fe’s:

  • Environment
  • Education
  • Staff-resident interaction
  • Care delivery program

AFA recognized Casa de Santa Fe as a model of dementia care in their community; noting that the community provides a secure environment and is well staffed with professionals skilled in handling the behavior associated with memory impairments.  Evaluators also commented that they found the community’s service delivery to be dedicated to providing optimal care to residents.

MBK Senior Living is doing it again. It either finds acquisition opportunities where it can make a difference or sells properties at a nice profit after owning and managing them for several years. MBK just closed on a 67-unit assisted living community in the Denver, Colorado market, and while they paid a net price of about $287,000 per unit for the relatively new building, that per-unit price will drop as they convert some of the larger, two-bedroom units into studios and one-bedrooms. It is currently licensed for 83 beds. Management believes they can increase the size of the community by 12 to 15 units with this change, and increase the occupancy from 90% to 95%. Given the large size of the community at about 70,000 square feet, this should not be a problem. After all, the more than 1,000 gross square feet per unit is more typical of an independent living community with larger units and more common space. This change should increase revenues by $500,000 to $600,000 annually, in a base-case scenario, most of which will fall to the bottom line. In-place revenues are close to $3.4 million, and the current operating margin is an attractive 35% after management fee, and that should approach 40% by the second year. Not too shabby. MBK plans on spending between $1.0 million and $1.5 million on the upgrades, which will include increasing the size of the dining room and enhancing the outside appearance. The actual award was presented to Bill in a room full of cheering friends, family and co-workers at the 2012 CALA Fall Conference & Trade Show in Anaheim California. The Outstanding Team Member Award is one of four categories in the Excellence in Service Award program sponsored by CALA twice a year. Nominations are made by member organizations and finalists chosen from the written nomination forms by the Excellence in Service Awards Committee. The committee then conducts telephone interviews with the nominating person and selects the most outstanding individual for each category. Why was Bill selected? Well, for the past eight years Bill has made an extraordinary “must see event” out of the communities’ weekend scenic drives. He begins with meticulous research, the finds just the right music to set the tone, and tops it off by skillfully decorating the inside of the bus to suit the occasion. Year round, the walls of the bus are decorated with resident photos, making simple trips to the grocery store or medical appointments an enjoyable experience. “Bill does his job with a professionalism and love for senior s, and has morphed his role into a position that truly enhances residents’ quality of life”, said Huntington Terrace’s Executive Director.
